Dear Friends and Neighbors,
Great cities do not happen by accident. It takes a community working together to make things happen. During my tenure as mayor of Fort Lauderdale,
I have been privileged to lead a dynamic community to build a wonderful city. The Fort Lauderdale of today looks very different today from the Fort Lauderdale of ten years ago. The beach has been revitalized. We have developed a thriving arts and entertainment district. Riverwalk has become a focal point for community gatherin
gs. New parks have been built. Older parks have been modernized and refurbished. New investments are bringing vitality and enhanced opportunities to parts of our city which were previously ignored.
Las Olas is bustling with successful shops and restaurants. Our city serves as the headquarters for the county's legislative, judicial and educational governments. A homeless center replaces the tents which once gained national notoriety.
New schools have been built, and older schools have been renovated. Fort Lauderdale neighborhoods are stronger than ever. Good things have happened in Fort Lauderdale!
No one person is responsible for the success we have experienced. It has
taken hard work and vision to bring about the renaissance of Fort Lauderdale. As mayor, I have had the privilege of leading you in many initiatives, but our job is not done.
The next few years will determine whether we succeed in our mission to be the greatest city of our size. There are many critical issues facing us such as traffic congestion, where to build big buildings and where to preserve neighborhoods, how to create a safe and nurturing environment for the children who will grow up in our city, how to encourage business opportunities while preserving the quality of life that attracted us to this city. In a few months we will hold our city elections. I am asking you to join me in making this election season a time for constructive debate of our visions. Let's come together as a community and talk about how we want Fort Lauderdale to evolve. And, on February 14. 2006, let's vote for the leadership that will make our vision a reality.
When you vote, I hope you will once again give me the opportunity to serve you as your mayor.
